Robert joined WMT in July 2018 on the 3-year ACA graduate trainee programme. Prior to joining WMT he studied at Oxford University and has a degree in History and Economics. On completion of his degree he spent a year working for a summer school company in both the UK and New York before applying for graduate positions.
“I applied for a number of graduate trainee positions through the ICAEW website. I was quite flexible about location but knew I wanted to be in, or within travelling distance of London. WMT appealed to me as a full-service firm, meaning I would gain experience in a range of service areas throughout training, and would be able to work more closely with clients and partners. I completed the application and HAT online aptitude tests before being invited to an assessment day.
From application through to being offered the role, I liked that I dealt with Vicki directly. As one of the graduate managers she had a really good understanding of the trainee programme and I felt that she was recruiting someone that she wanted to work with rather than just someone that fitted pre-determined criteria – which was how it felt at some of the other interviews I had attended at other firms that were lead solely by their HR personnel”
Nearly a year into his training, Robert has spent time working within both the payroll and accountancy and assurance teams.
“I have particularly enjoyed my time working in audit for one of our hospitality clients. I enjoyed working closely with their finance director to really understand what motivates him within the business and the connection between the work we do and how it helps them succeed.
In training you do need to be organised to balance client work and study. However, all the exams I’ve had so far have felt achievable and we are given time away from the office to study beforehand.
Everyone at WMT works hard and there is a good group of like-minded people in the office which creates a really friendly and relaxed atmosphere. It can be tough learning whilst on the job especially when faced with questions from clients, but we are well supported by other graduates and the partners and managers, so I feel comfortable asking for help.
When I finish my training I want to continue to work in practice but would like to explore working in different service areas, perhaps corporate tax.”
