Michael is a graduate from York university with a degree in Biology. He joined the team at WMT on the 3-year ACA trainee programme in July 2018.
“I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I left university. Initially I spent some time working as a labourer for Network Rail on the London underground before deciding that wanted to pursue a career as an accountant. My dad was an accountant, so he was on-hand to offer some sound advice when I was deciding which route to take.
I have always lived in St Albans so when I saw the role advertised on the WMT website it seemed like an obvious choice. I applied and was invited to interview shortly after.
The interview process was thorough. I had an initial interview with one of the partners and two of the graduate managers, a tour of the office, carried out a test and met with the Managing Partner, Andrew. I was offered the role a couple of days later.”
As part of the trainee programme, Michael is spending time in several different client-facing teams to get a full understanding of the firm’s service areas.
“In my first few weeks I spent time working in the tronc team helping with tip and service charge distributions for hospitality clients. I’m now in the accountancy and assurance team where I’ll be doing bookkeeping, annual accounts and audits.
I enjoy the variety of work and the team in the office have been really friendly and welcoming – I’m never worried about approaching anyone to ask for help. It’s nice to be working alongside other graduates too, some are at the same stage of training as me and some are further ahead, so are available for support and understand the challenges faced in training.
Highlights of my time at WMT so far include passing my first few exams – we are given plenty of time to study and the client work really helps to reinforce the theory. I have also joined the social committee, getting involved in organising and running events for the wider team, which has been a great way to get to know my colleagues.”
