Surge in people seeking jobs in the hospitality sector
21/03/2023
The number of UK workers seeking jobs in the hospitality sector has surged over recent months, according to a new report.
The survey, from Caterer.com, shows how thousands of people are looking to pubs, restaurants and hotels for a new income.
The survey of 1,200 workers shows that 2.9 million people are currently thinking of making a move into hospitality from another sector, with 2.1 million considering a role in hospitality as an additional job.
In addition, UK-based Google searches for hospitality jobs rose by 23 per cent between 2021 and 2022, in comparison to overall job searches which showed no increase over the year.
The Caterer.com recently launched a campaign in association with Choose Hospitality and top hospitality brands to ‘inspire’ the next generation of talent via a series of inspiring videos, content and resources, featuring some of the UK’s leading hospitality celebrities, including Tom Kerridge.
There are good reasons for making the move to the hospitality sector including:
Flexible working options
If you are the type of individual that does not like being tied down by schedules, the industry could be ideal. It is extremely flexible and can be financially rewarding.
Excellent Perks
Some tips can go as high as 20 per cent or beyond when excellent service is provided and is a valuable addition to income. The law says they must now be fairly distributed to staff.
Some of the most rewarding and creative jobs in the sector could include areas like:
Food and Beverage: A good example could be a restaurant management trainee with drive, skill and initiative rising to become food & beverage director at one of the top hospitality companies in the world.
Chefs: The TV is never short of top celebrity chefs who have used their skills to build lucrative careers as TV hosts and authors, often after starting at the bottom.
Wine sommeliers: A top-level sommelier will make a good level of income. Getting a sommelier certification can open up a new career direction for a restaurant bar manager in a relatively short time. But it could also enhance prospects at the current place of employment.
Sales and Marketing: The skills of some in the industry may not lie with food and drink, but sales and marketing are key areas for profitability and can offer rewards and career satisfaction.
IT and technology: Hospitality is becoming ever more reliant on technology, particularly the collection of customer data, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI), can be utilised for a huge range of functions. This could range from customer service to personalisation tasks, sales processes and direct messaging to clients about reservations and availability. There could be exciting development opportunities for those with IT skills.
