Updates to the Charity Governance Code
The Charity Governance Code aims to help charities and their trustees develop high standards of governance.
The code is developed by a steering group made up of 200+ charities, individuals and related organisations and is reviewed and updated every 3 years. The most recent refresh was published in December 2020 following rigorous consultation with the sector.
The changes made focus predominantly on Principle 3: Integrity and Principle 6: Diversity – now called Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. These were the principles that received the most consistent feedback from consultation.
More information on the recent changes can be found on the Charity Governance Code website.
The full version of the Charity Governance Code for both large and smaller charities and diagnostic tool can be downloaded for free by clicking here.
Although the Code is not a legal or regulatory requirement, it draws upon, but is fundamentally different to, the Charity Commissions guidance. It sets principles and recommended practice for good governance and is deliberately aspirational to act as a tool for continuous improvement for all charities.
